WINDHAM – State Fire Marshal’s Office continues to investigate the Friday, Dec. 7, apartment building fire at 447 Gray Road in Windham, Sgt. Joel Davis said Wednesday afternoon.

It’s been more than a month since the fire was ruled an arson with no charges filed as of yet.

The fire took place around 1 p.m. when two women and a baby were still inside one of the units. Well-known Windham business owner Donato Corsetti, who had recently lost the building to foreclosure, was also inside the building. A Corsetti’s store employee saw Corsetti in a window if the middle unit and rescued the 66-year-old man. According to police, Corsetti was found bound by a lamp cord around his hands and neck and suffering from smoke inhalation.

“The case is still under investigation,” Davis said. “We’re working to get things together to present to the [Cumberland County] district attorney for review. And from there, we’ll make any announcements that come out of that.”

As revealed in a court affidavit, investigators were suspicious of Corsetti’s involvement in the fire after interviewing Corsetti several times at the hospital and again at home the night of the fire.

Davis said he can’t release any further details than were released in the affidavit “since it’s an ongoing criminal investigation,” Davis said.

The affidavit was filed Dec. 12 and was part of an application for a search warrant. Investigators were able to search Corsetti’s home and business office at the store he owns, located next door to the burned building. The affidavit indicated investigators were immediately suspicious of Corsetti’s version of events. They claim in the affidavit that Corsetti set the fire for insurance purposes and aimed to make it appear as a mob hit.

“The affidavit stands for itself,” Davis said. “But that’s just part of the investigation. An affidavit is just probable cause to do something, which is very low on the scales of justice, where beyond a reasonable doubt is obviously worth a lot more. So I really can’t comment on what we’re doing right now. There’s been a lot of investigation that’s been done since the affidavit was filed … and there’s still a lot of investigation to do.”
