TOPSHAM — The Mt. Ararat Middle School eighthgrade boys basketball team darted out to a 13-point first-quarter lead, but Auburn battled from behind, winning a close game 41-38 recently.
Down three points late in regulation, Mt. Ararat’s Haven Cutko completed a three-point play to tie the game. But, Samatar Iman made a desperation 3-pointer from the corner for the visitors’ win.
Jacob O’Neill paced the hosts with 11 points, while Cutko had nine and Cameron Cox seven. Cole Guerin and Jimmy Pelletier played well in the defensive end for the Eagles against a much taller Auburn squad.
The Eagles were right back in action just 24 hours later, traveling to South Paris to take on Oxford Hills.
Mt. Ararat again started strong, but this time finished the job for a 40-24 victory.
The Eagles featured balanced scoring, with Guerin with nine points, Cutko, Jake Steinman, O’Neill and Cox six each, Pelletier and Jacob Sturgess four apiece, and Kyle Brown three points.
Mt. Ararat finished four of six from the foul line, and Cutko, O’Neill and Guerin were solid defensively.
