Stay active this winter

Healthy Lincoln County, Let’s Go! Lincoln County and Lincoln County Healthcare will sponsor the 10th Annual Physical Challenge in 2013.

The seven-week winter event challenges participants to be physically active at least 30 minutes, four times a week.

The challenge runs from Jan. 14 to March 1.

Participants can participate solo or with a group at a variety of venues, including many indoor locations where they can walk safely for free.

KITTERY

Winter fun for all

The Recreation Department is offering winter activities for all ages.

Adult programs to be offered will include Pilates, Hatha Yoga, Yoga for Us All, Nordic Fitness Walking, Nordic Walking — Active, Zumba, Beginner West Coast Swing Dance, Ballroom Dancing, Intermediate and Beginning Tap Dance.

Youth programs will include a Mad Science after-school program, a Parent’s Night Out session, LEGO Camps, Junk to Funk! by Trash Can Lid Productions, Mosaic Art Class, a babysitting course, a sewing class, a youth writer’s group and theater classes.

Senior programming will include Movie Days, Breakfast Tuesdays, a Luau Luncheon, Meathouse Steak Tips, Friday BINGO, mahjong, cribbage, a program on Scottish history and culture, AARP Tax-Aide help and a Lobster Luncheon.

Rounding up songwriters

A Songwriters Circle, led by veteran songwriter David Dodson, will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Camden Public Library, 55 Main St.

All are welcome to attend the free, informal circle of songs. Attendees also are encouraged to bring their music to play for some feedback.

Beverly Scott, a presentation and performance instructor with Free Your Talents, will teach the workshop, “Being Free in Front of an Audience — You’ve Got What It Takes,” from 1 to 6 p.m. Jan. 12 at High Mountain Hall, 5 Mountain St.

The registration fee is $50 in advance, by Jan. 7, or $60 thereafter.

SCARBOROUGH

Historical presentation

The Scarborough Historical Society will meet at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the society’s museum and meeting room at 647 Route 1, adjacent to the Dunstan Fire Station.

A brief business meeting will be held, followed by a 60-minute presentation by Karen Sherry, curator of American art.

Meetings are free and open to the public. However, donations are always welcome.

Library to host children

McArthur Public Library will host two events in its children’s area this week.

A visit and interactive workshop for children with Portland artist Jay Piscopo will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday.

Piscopo is the author and illustrator of “The Undersea Adventures of Capt’n Eli,” an all-ages graphic novel series. The workshop is open to children ages 7 to 12.

On Saturday, the library will hold a book sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
