AUGUSTA (AP) — State of Maine flags may be flown at half-staff from sunrise to sunset in Mount Vernon to honor Russell Libby, a leader of the organic farming movement in the state.

The 56-year-old Libby died last Sunday after a battle with cancer. Libby was executive director of the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association for 17 years, growing the organization into the largest state-level organic association in the nation.

Libby previously served as an official with the Maine Department of Agriculture.

The flags in town may be flown at half-staff on Saturday in his honor.
