FREEPORT – In a special election held Dec. 2, a handful of voters elected David S. Gleeson Jr., as the new council representative from District 1.

Gleeson was elected to replace former District 1 Councilor Sara Gideon, who resigned after her family moved out of the district.

Voter turnout was light in the special election, with only 36 votes cast. Gleeson, who was the only candidate listed on the ballot, garnered 34 votes to win the seat. Write-in candidate Daniel J. Collins received the other two votes.

Gleeson, whose term, under the rules of the special election, expires next year, is one of three first-term councilors on the board. He joins Melanie Sachs and Andrew Wellen, who were both elected to their first term in November. In addition, the council has a new chairman. James Hendricks was recently elected to the post after the previous chairman, James Cassida, lost a re-election bid to Wellen in November.
