Women’s Club ?to hear choir

The Freeport Women’s Club will be meeting on Friday, Dec. 14, at 1 p.m. at the Freeport Community Library. The program will feature the Freeport High School Chamber Choir. Refreshments will be served and visitors are welcome.

Sample new foods

Learn a new dish from around the world at the Freeport Community Center. This month, as part of her “Immigrant Kitchens” series, Lindsay Sterling will be featuring Costa Rican Arroz Con Polo. Chorus presents ?‘The Promise of Light’

The Greater Freeport Community Chorus will present its winter concert, entitled “The Promise of Light,” on Saturday, Dec. 15, at 7:30 p.m., at the First Parish Church, 40 Main St., Freeport; and Sunday, Dec. 16, at 2:30 p.m., at the Tuttle Road United Methodist Church, 52 Tuttle Road, Cumberland.

The 70-member chorus is directed by Virgil Bozeman and accompanied by Dorothy Cuprak. The concert’s title piece, “The Promise of Light,” by George Stitt and lyricist Len Schiff, is a haunting melody that reflects their attempt to “write something secular and yet reverent about the December holiday season.”

Tickets are $10 per person or $25 per family and can be purchased from chorus members, at Music and Moore, located at 220 Bath Road in Brunswick, the Freeport Community Center or at the door. For more information, go to www.gfccweb.org.

‘Christmas Winds’ ?concert Dec. 16

“Christmas Winds,” holiday music by the Pine Tree Coastal Winds, Freeport’s community concert band, will be presented Sunday, Dec. 16, 5 p.m., at the Life Source Ministry Church, 34 Grover Lane, Brunswick.

Thrift shop estate sale continues

The Freeport Community Thrift Shop will continue its holiday estate sale on weekends at 2 Depot St. (the building that formerly housed S&K Menswear). The hours are Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday from 1-4 p.m. For more information, go to www.fcsmaine.org.

Winter parking ban

The town of Freeport has announced its annual parking ban, which prohibits parking on all town streets from 11 p.m.-7 a.m. is in effect from Nov. 1 – April 15.

Dog, owner reunited

According to Freeport Deputy Town Clerk Mary Howe, the dog from the Freeport area that was found in Frankfort near Searsport was reunited with his owner on Nov. 15.

Library news and notes

December is “Food for Fines” month at the library. Overdue library charges can be forgiven in exchange for non-perishable food items that are equal in value to the fines. All of the food collected will go to the food pantry at Freeport Community Services.

Redeemable cans and bottles can be donated during the month of December at Bow Street Market. Proceeds benefit the library.

The library will be showing the movie “Brave,” rated PG, as a free after-school movie for kids in grades 6-8 on Thursday, Dec. 13, at 2:20 p.m. The movie is 1 hour and 40 minutes long and free popcorn will be served.

Miss Lisa’s Songs and Stories will be in the Children’s Room on Saturday, Dec. 15, from 10-11 a.m.

The Thursday midday movie on Dec. 20 at 1 p.m. will be “The King’s Speech,” which is rated R.

The GWC (Giving Children Warmth) program will be making blankets for children in Afghanistan by knitting squares and sewing them together. The group meets on Mondays from 2:45- 4 p.m. to teach volunteers from age 11 through adult to knit.

Story time for toddlers and preschoolers takes place every Tuesday morning. There are two 15-minute story times at 9:30 and 9:45 for younger kids with shorter attention spans. At 10, there is a 30-minute story time for preschoolers. The morning features songs and a small snack.
