YARMOUTH — School committee members in Yarmouth could be searching for a new superintendent soon.

Judith Paolucci, who has held the top education job in Yarmouth since 2009, has been offered a superintendent position in Leicester, Mass., Paolucci said Monday.

Paolucci has not accepted the offer and continues to negotiate a contract, she said. The offer is one of three she is entertaining in southern New England. She said the Leicester position would bring her closer to Rhode Island, where her husband is employed and where the couple has family.

Paolucci declined to identify the two other districts because the deliberations are not public.

“There are details, frankly, that have to be worked out,” she said. “It’s really a funny place to be when you feel so wanted.”

Abby Diggins, chair of the Yarmouth school committee, said that with Paolucci’s departure apparently imminent, the committee would begin forming a group to find her replacement, but said no plans were concrete. Paolucci has not notified the district of her potential time frame for leaving.

“It’s possible we’d put an interim in place while we performed a search for a permanent superintendent,” Diggins said.

The School Committee meets next on Thursday, when its likely the body will discuss succession plans.
