BIDDEFORD — After two wins and a one-goal loss to start the season, the Biddeford girls hockey team came back to Earth with a thud against Falmouth on Wednesday, falling to the Yachtsmen 6-0 at Biddeford Ice Arena.
“It’s really disappointing to lose 6-0 in your venue,” said Biddeford head coach Ashley Potvin. “This game just showed us that there are a lot of things that we still need to work on, and that really goes to show that if you skate hard for three periods, you’re going to win.”
Potvin alluded to Falmouth out-skating her team, saying that after a scoreless first period, the team that hustled more won.
“The bottom line was that we didn’t skate hard for three periods, and that is the most disappointing thing about the loss,” said Potvin.
There were some bright spots for the Tigers, however, as Biddeford goalie Cassie Ellis made two big saves in the first two minutes of the game and was continually peppered with shots from there. Nothing got by her in the first frame.
“It was a lot of pressure on me. It was hard,” said Ellis. “But I tried my best and stopped as many as I could.”
“If we wouldn’t have had her, it wouldn’t have even been close,” Potvin said. “Her team should be very thankful that she stuck with it, and really stayed up in net.”
Ellis made an astounding 48 saves on the 54 shots she faced. She said she never gave up, even when Falmouth scored two quick goals in the second period.
“It’s nerve-wracking, because you’re down a little bit on yourself, and you just try to get yourself back up and play your best,” Ellis said.
Jayde Bazinet scored 2:35 into the second period to break the scoreless deadlock, and Camden Carrier scored less than a minute later. Gabby St. Angelo and Abby Payson added goals for Falmouth in the second period to put the game out of reach. Sarah Hutcheon’s scored a goal 38 seconds into the third period, and Megan Hallowell scored the last of the six Yachtsmen goals.
Potvin said the loss was a tough pill to swallow, but she’s glad it’s still early in the season.
“I’d rather have this happen now than later in the season. There’s a lot of things that we can take away from this game and really just run with them in practice,” said Potvin.
Potvin said she is already looking ahead to the next game, when the Tigers face Gorham/Bonny Eagle on the road on Saturday. She’s said she’s hoping for a better start, and in turn, a better result.
“Our biggest goal is to come out and win the first period,” she said.
