YARMOUTH — The Mt. Ararat Middle School and Cape Elizabeth ice hockey teams faced off at North Yarmouth Academy on Sunday night in Southern Maine Middle School Hockey League season-opening action with the Capers prevailing, 4-3.
MA’s Tyler Halls came out strong, netting two goals in the first period, one assisted by Mark Abreu and the other unassisted.
Cape rebounded to score three goals in the final minutes of the first period, capitalizing on a brief defensive breakdown in front of the Eagles’ net.
Halls’ hat-trick goal brought it back to a 3-3 game in the second period.
In the final seconds, Cape Elizabeth pounced on a neutral zone opportunity and on a breakaway beat Mt. Ararat goalie Dylan Schenk for the go-ahead tally.
The next Mt. Ararat game is this upcoming Sunday at 5 p.m. at Family Ice Center in Falmouth.
