LEWISTON — Katherine Dumoulin nearly cost her team a chance at a win against St. Dominic, taking a penalty less than two minutes into overtime. But the Biddeford girls hockey team killed off the penalty, and Dumoulin got redemption, scoring the game-winning goal with 4:17 to go as the Tigers skated to a 4-3 win at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee in Lewiston on Saturday.

“It felt so good,” Dumoulin said of scoring the goal. “I was really worried for my team, because I didn’t want to be the reason that we lost. And so I was praying the whole time in the penalty box. Just getting out there, and getting that goal from a good shot rebound from my teammate, it just felt like a big release.”

Biddeford head coach Ashley Potvin said that Dumoulin was unlucky to be called for a penalty on a play where she was working hard in front of the net. Potvin called the goal “the best redemption of all.”

The Saints in some ways were lucky to have forced the game to overtime. They played with just eight skaters, and had to fend off numerous early chances by the Tigers. Biddeford scored just one goal in the first period, Dumoulin’s first goal of the game, and St. Dom’s answered just 1:03 later. That didn’t sit well with Potvin.

“It was definitely frustrating to have all those chances early and not be able to capitalize,” said Potvin. “But they ended up capitalizing when they needed to, so at the end of the day that’s all that matters.”

Brea Rivard gave the Tigers the lead back late in the second period, on a pass from Ann-Marie Rowe, and led 2-1 after two periods. The Tigers also killed off two penalties in the period, including goalie Cassie Ellis making a glove save on a shot by Tia Rotolico with two seconds left in the first penalty kill.

“Penalty kill, we did an excellent job with that,” said Potvin.

Biddeford took a 3-1 lead just 3:01 into the third period on a goal by Tiffany Gagne, but St. Dom’s brought it back to a one-goal deficit less than a minute later when Rotolico fed Kayla McLellan.

The Saints tied the game with two minutes to go when McLellan scored in a four-on-four situation, as she found a crease between two defenders and got a clean shot on Ellis.

St. Dom’s had the momentum heading into overtime, and seemingly gained even more when Dumoulin went to the penalty box 1:47 in for hooking. But the Tigers killed off the penalty, and Dumoulin atoned for her mistake.

“We were pretty upset when they ended up coming back, because we had so many more skaters,” said Dumoulin. “So it just made us all the more determined to win.”

The win was the Tigers’ second of the season, and Dumoulin said she’s happy they held on.

“It was awesome, Because I know (Monday) hopefully we won’t do as many sprints as we would if we lost,” she said, with Potvin in earshot.
