Learn to Ski
For the 22nd season, the Topsham Rec. will offer Learn to Ski and Snowboard lessons at Lost Valley in Auburn.
New this year are ski passes for parents and kids with two or more years of lessons.
Lessons are offered on Tuesday evenings in January for four weeks this year. Topsham staff and volunteers will provide supervision to and from the area.
The first session is set for Jan. 8, departing at 4:15 p.m. from Town Hall, and returning at 8:45 p.m.
The cost is $140, which includes lessons and travel. If needing to rent equipment, the cost for lessons, transportation and rentals is $195. Ski passes cost $95.
Forms are available at school offices.
The deadline is Dec. 14, with a $20 fee charged after that date. The program is for children in School Administration District 75 only.
Open Gym
This basketball program returns on Sundays at Mt. Ararat High School.
Participants are asked to use the backside entrance to the gym, with the program running until March.
Family open gym costs $1 per person and runs from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Children in fifth grade and under must be accompanied by a parent or adult.
Adult open gym is from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at a cost of $1 per person. This is for pick-up basketball only, and all participants must by 18 or older.
Little Dribblers Basketball
Have your first- and second-grader participate in this fun-filled basketball skills program.
Run by Mt. Ararat high school girls basketball coach Kelly LaFountain, this six-week program will be held Saturday mornings, beginning Jan. 5, and will introduce the fundamentals of basketball through games, skills and small-sided scrimmages.
The cost is $35 before Dec. 14, $45 after on a space-available basis, and is for anyone residing in the SAD-75 area.
Times will be announced.
‘Top Hoops’
Mt. Ararat high school boys basketball coach Aaron Watson and members of the varsity Eagles will hold both a boys and girls “Top Hoops” program for players in grades 7-8.
This six-week program is intended to spruce up players’ skills.
The program begins Jan. 5 and will run for six weeks at a cost of $35 (SAD-75 players only).
The girls will be on the court from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., with the boys from 10:30 a.m. to noon.
Foul Shooting Contest
On Dec. 27, boys and girls ages 8-13 are invited to the Brunswick Parks and Recreation Center (30 Federal Street) for the Elks Foul Shooting Contest.
The event begins at 1:30 p.m.
Preregistration is required at the Topsham Rec.
There are six age divisions, boys 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13, as well as girls 8- 9, 10-11 and 12-13.
‘Hot Shots’
This year’s “Hot Shot” basketball competition, in conjunction with the Maine Red Claws, will be held Dec. 27 at Mt. Ararat Middle School, beginning at 9 a.m.
Ages 9-15 residing in SAD-75 towns are welcomed.
Participants have three oneminute rounds to make shots from five spaces on the floor. Points are awarded based on number of spots, shots made, etc.
Successful participants will advance to the Regional level.
No preregistration is required, and the event is free.
Ladies volleyball
Looking for a winter physical activity? Ladies grab your sneakers and join in on an evening of fun and exercise playing volleyball.
The program kicks off Jan. 2, and runs Wednesday evenings beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Williams Cone School gymnasium.
The cost is $1 per evening.
Candlepin Bowling
Columbus Bowling Bowl in Brunswick hosts this program for children ages 8-14 beginning Jan. 12.
This 10-week program, costing $35 for SAD-75 residents and $45 for nonresidents, includes three strings, shoe rental and instruction.
Teams will be formed for league play and an end of the season tournament will take place.
Beginning and advanced bowler sessions begin at 11 a.m.
Youth wrestling
This program will be run by Mt. Ararat High School wrestling coaches.
This is a fun-filled, skill-building program, running on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning Jan. 8 for 10 weeks.
The cost for ages 4-6 is $15 and runs from 6 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., followed from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. for grades 2-5 at a cost of $37.
Participants need to wear proper attire.
