BRUNSWICK — The Senior and Westminster choirs of First Parish Church, UCC, will join forces Dec. 9 to present a new work, “On Christmas Night,” by British composer Bob Chilcott. This fresh work is accompanied by flute, oboe, harp, piano and percussion.
The performance will be during the 10 a.m. worship service.
Composed in 2010 and first performed in Austin, Texas, “On Christmas Night” is a musical celebration of the Christmas story, presented as a sequence of eight original setting of carols. Chilcott calls upon several familiar carol melodies within his own settings, resulting in an array of styles and moods — from comforting and reflective to jubilant, swinging and folksy. Since its premiere, it has enjoyed many performances in the U.S. and abroad.
Chilcott has been involved with choral music all his life, first as a chorister and then a choral scholar at King’s College in Cambridge, England. Later, he sang and composed music for 12 years with the King’s Singers. His experiences with that group, his commitment to young and amateur choirs, and his belief that music can unite people, have inspired him to compose full-time. His music bears a kinship to the writings of John Rutter.
First Parish Church, UCC, is located at the corner of Bath Road and Maine Street by Bowdoin College.
