Firefighters were able to quickly knock down a fire that struck the upper floors of a home on 41 East Milan St. on Tuesday night. The home sustained damage to secondfloor rooms and the attic.
Carter and Anita Ruff and their children headed outside as soon as a neighbor noticed the fire, and nobody was injured, Fire Chief Stephen Hinds said.
Hinds said the fire emanated from a wood stove and probably started in the upper level of a “metalbestos” chimney, which features a pipe within a pipe. A collar where the pipes come together probably was worn and cracked, he said.
Crews were called out at 6:20 p.m., and cleared the scene at 7:40 p.m. It was reported as a chimney fire, but when firefighters arrived they saw flames coming through the roof, near the chimney.
“The fire guys did a great job,” Hinds said. “It was a nice stop.” Crews from West Bath and Brunswick assisted.
