MT. ARARAT HIGH SCHOOL in Topsham retired the No. 8 jersey worn by Major League Baseball pitcher Mark Rogers from 2001-04 when he was a standout player for the Eagles. The Monday afternoon ceremony was attended by students and teachers in addition to friends, family and members of the community. Former teachers, the assistant principal and current student athletes cheered when Rogers was given a uniform and cap from the Mt. Ararat team. His retired jersey will be framed and displayed at the school. As Rogers stood to address the crowd, he asked, “So which period did I get you guys out of to come here and see me?,” which drew cheers and clapping. Rogers, who grew up on Orr’s Island in Harpswell, was drafted fifth overall by the Milwaukee Brewers in 2004, the year he was named Gatorade National Baseball Player of the Year. Presenting the jersey is Athletic Director Todd Sampson. At right is Colin Roy, who served as Mt. Ararat athletic director when Rogers played.
