The fourth annual People Plus Holiday food drive to benefit Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Program is “right on target” at the effort’s midway point, according to People Plus member services coordinator Frank Connors.
“We dropped off two boxes on Monday of Thanksgiving week,” Connors said, “so we’ve already delivered over 350 pieces and just over 300 pounds. It would be nicer to be closer to the 500 mark, but we’ve already set a record.”
On Nov. 1st, Connors’ now familar little red wheelbarrow appeared in the center lobby, and goods have been delivered singularly and by the bagfull. The goal this season is to collect and contribute 1,000 pieces and 1,000 pounds of non-perishable foodstuffs for the MCHPP organization.
“The program has what amounts to a constant and unending need,” said Rebecca Banks, programming and outreach coordinator.
In previous years, the effort has never produced more than 450 pounds of food. Connors said he is very confident “that record will be beat by Thanksgiving, and by Christmas, we’ll be wicked close or over our goal.”
During this month’s holiday Lunch & Connections meal, more than 30 cans of food were dropped off by members. “Our members deserve all the credit for this one,” Connors said.
