Now that Thanksgiving and “Black Friday” have come and gone — the holiday shopping season is “officially” open. It’s also the beginning of the frenzy that often comes with our pre-holiday preparations and shopping.

Unfortunately, it’s also the time for unscrupulous “shoppers” to be on the lookout for bargains — but not the kind we usually seek such as sales or coupons. No, the “bargains” for the unscrupulous shopper may come in the form of an unlocked car, or an unattended purse left in the shopping cart. Or, you may receive a telephone call from a nonexistent charity asking for donations for Christmas gifts for children or the needy. Just give them a credit card number.

Merrymeeting Bay TRIAD offers these holiday tips:

ALWAYS LOCK YOUR CAR — no matter where you park it and even if you’re just running a quick errand and you’ll “only be a minute.” That’s all it takes for these professional “shoppers.”

KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR PURSE. Please don’t leave it in a shopping cart unattended.

BE PRUDENT in responding to solicitations from anyone you don’t know. Never give personal or credit card information to anyone unless you initiate the call.

You have our best wishes for a safe and happy holiday season. We’re always glad to hear from you. Send comments or questions to www.merrymeetingbaytriad.org or call 751-6989.
