Thanksgiving is here, once again, and if you push aside all of the Black Friday fliers, there are some great stories about local people doing their part to make sure everyone has a happy holiday and a warm meal.

In the weekend edition, the Journal Tribune listed the details of eight free Thanksgiving meals to be offered in the area. The weekend feature also detailed the efforts of some dedicated church members and volunteers who feed hundreds of people each and every year, giving up their own holiday traditions to create new ones for people in need ”“ whether it’s food or just some company.

In Old Orchard Beach, 300 people will be served traditional holiday fare on Thursday at the eighth annual Thanksgiving dinner. And in Saco, Most Holy Trinity Church in Saco will be the site of another dinner that could serve up to 600 people.

Countless others will receive food boxes from area food pantries to ensure they have a holiday meal for their families, and many of us have the luxury of filling our holiday tables with turkey and all the fixings each and every year.

While the hustle and bustle of the holiday season gets under way, we ask our readers to remember Thanksgiving Day and the feeling of spending time with loved ones, enjoying good food, and to make that a reality for another family on another occasion.

Our area pantries are serving more and more people, and with closures of employers like Maine Energy Recovery Company and Hostess, many will be having a more difficult winter than they likely expected. Although most people don’t have a lot of money to spare, every dollar ”“ or canned good ”“ helps.

We hope York County residents will find it in their hearts, once again, to support their neighbors and answer the call to those in need, to ensure that everyone county-wide will have a bright holiday season and beyond.
