Lawrence resigns school post

Anne Lawrence has resigned from the Gorham School Committee effective Friday, Nov. 30.

Kyle Currier, school committee chairwoman, announced in the board meeting last week that Lawrence is resigning. “She is moving,” Currier said and thanked Lawrence for her service.

Lawrence could not be reached for comment this week.

Lawrence, who was elected to the school committee last year, leaves with two years remaining on her three-year term.

Superintendent Ted Sharp last week expected the school committee would appoint someone in December or January to fill Lawrence’s term until an election in June 2013.

Trash schedule for Thanksgiving week

Because of Thanksgiving Day on Thursday, Nov. 22, Gorham Public Works Department has announced that the trash and recycling pickup for that day has been re-scheduled to Friday, Nov. 23.

Wood to speak ?in North Gorham

Maine author Monica Wood will discuss her latest book, “When We were the Kennedys,” at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 29, at the North Gorham Public Library, corner of North Gorham and Standish Neck roads.

Set in Mexico, Maine, Wood’s memoir chronicles upheavals in the town and in her family in 1963. The program is free.

Chamber singers ?to perform

The Gorham High School Chamber Singers will entertain when the Gorham Historical Society meets at 7 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 10, at the Gorham Savings Bank Operation Center off Gray Road (Route 202).

Jan Labrecque, a society spokeswoman, said the program is the singers’ annual “Cookie Dig.”

C.O.P.S. graduates

A class that included several Gorham citizens recently completed an eight-week course taught by representatives from District 2 Southern Maine police departments and social service agencies.

Citizen Oriented Policing School, known by its acronym C.O.P.S., provides an overview of all aspects of police department operations to citizens including a session in firearms simulation training at Kaplan University. Participants gain a better understanding of how their local police departments function and their role in protecting the public.

Ecumenical holiday season service

The Gorham Ecumenical Council is sponsoring a Christmas season service for those who do not feel like celebrating.

The service of comfort and rest will be at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Dec.13, at the Cressey Road United Methodist Church, 81 Cressey Road, in Gorham.

For many people, problems such as the loss of a loved one, uncertainty of employment, a serious illness or a broken relationship may make a person seem out of step with the cheery majority. This service will offer a quiet place to be with one’s sadness and also realize no one is alone, providing words of comfort and hope, but in a quieter way.

Light refreshments will be served following the service.

Holiday party set ?for business group

The Gorham Business Exchange will hold its annual holiday party on Thursday, Dec. 6, from 5-7 p.m. at the Odd Fellows Hall, 34 School St., Gorham.

Hosts Bruce Roullard, Duane Dreger and Lisa Allen will be collecting donations for heating assistance for Gorham residents in need.

Seniors to hear Wasowski

Dr. Mark J. Wasowski, of the North Windham Chiropractic and Rehabilitation, will speak at 11:45 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 28, at the Lakes Region Senior Center, 40 Acorn St., Gorham. He will talk about services available to senior citizens.

The program, which is open to the public, is part of a continuing series at the center about health. Take a bay lunch and dessert and beverages will be provided.

U.S. taxpayer debt

The Bureau of Public Debt reported on Nov. 14 that the U.S. public debt was $16,244,384,093,831.92.
