Andrew Libby scored three touchdowns and the Thornton Academy defense pressured Cheverus the entire game as the Golden Trojans captured the Western Maine Class A football title and ended the Stags’ winning streak with a 20-13 win Saturday afternoon at Boulos Stadium in Portland.

Cheverus had won 34 consecutive games over three seasons, but ran into a determined team Thornton team that had lost to the Stags a month ago in the regular season.

Thornton (10-1) advanced to the state final next Saturday at Fitzpatrick Stadium in Portland. It will be Thornton’s first appearance in a state championship game since 1988.

Cheverus (10-1) lost for the first time since a 7-6 defeat to Windham in the 2009 regional final. The Stags had won the last two Class A state titles.
