STANDISH – Democrat Mike Shaw will return to the Maine House of Representatives to represent Standish residents for a third term.

Shaw received 2,298 votes in defeating Republican Todd Delaney (1,541 votes) and Green Independent Michael Wakefield (571 votes) to take District 102.

“I’d like to thank my opponents for running a respectful race and I’d like to thank the people of Standish for putting their trust in me to represent them again in Augusta,” Shaw said.

Shaw is known as a conservative Democrat and aims to play a key role as a centrist.

“I think I’m definitely going to make sure the Moderate Caucus is organized again. I think we accomplish quite a bit working together and I’m going to continue to do that,” Shaw said.

The election results were almost a duplicate of 2010 when Shaw defeated Delaney and Wakefield by about the same vote margin.

Delaney, who said he ran a stronger campaign this year, said, “I wish the result was different because I know in my heart that I would have done a better job than my opponent. I feel there are issues that aren’t going to be addressed in Augusta and basically I felt very strongly the people of Standish deserve a clearer and more sound voice and that just didn’t happen.”

Wakefield said the election results should serve Standish well and that he’ll shoot for another legislative bid in 2014 and possibly apply for open Bonny Eagle school board positions in the meantime.

“I was pleased with the results I got. I think being an unknown in a three-way race getting 13 percent as a Green is pretty good. So I’m encouraged,” Wakefield said.
