WINDHAM – Windham voters on Tuesday returned incumbents Toby Pennels and Marge Govoni to their seats on the Windham-Raymond School Board. Both will serve three-year terms.

Pennels, on the board for 11 years, received 3,751 votes. Govoni picked up 3,199 votes, and newcomer Eric Colby got 2,704 votes. Only the top two earned seats on the nine-member board that represents Regional School Unit 14.

Pennels did not return calls seeking comment, but Govoni was thanking voters on Wednesday morning.

“Thanks to all the residents of Windham who voted and especially to those who re-elected me to the School Board,” she said. “We may not always agree but please know that I always do what I feel is best for the students when making my decisions. I love the work I do on the board and my times spent within our district’s schools. Thank you again.”

Pennels and Govoni were up for election immediately following a controversial vote that would have shifted northern Windham students to Raymond schools. Govoni voted in favor of the redistricting proposal while Pennels voted against it.

Colby, a South Windham resident, credits his sizeable vote total to knowing many people in town through various organizations, and he wishes the winners well.

“I’ll look at it again when there’s a position open. I’ve got the signs,” Colby joked. “But I’m not totally disappointed. There was a lot of effort that goes into it, a lot of late nights but I’ll look into other things in the community where I can help out and be supportive. But it is what it is. The other two I think will do a good job and I think they really care about what they’re doing so the community is served one way or another.”
