The U.S. Geological Survey says earthquake shaking in the eastern United States can travel much farther and cause damage over larger areas than previously thought.

Scientists found that last year’s magnitude 5.8 earthquake in Virginia triggered landslides over an area 20 times larger than previous research has shown.

The study will help inform hazard and risk assessments and emergency preparedness.

Hollis Center was the epicenter of a 4.0 earthquake in October that was felt across Maine and throughout New England.
