Evening of jazz ?piano Nov. 10

An evening of jazz piano, featuring local musician Tom Whitehead, will be held at the Durham Friends Meeting House, 532 Quaker Meetinghouse Road, Durham on Saturday, Nov. 10 at 7 p.m. Admission is by donation and all proceeds benefit the Durham Friends DYF youth group.

Whitehead has played piano since the age of 4. He was first inspired to play by his parents, Macy and Edie Whitehead, to whom this performance is dedicated. His style of piano playing is a virtual “musical gumbo” of jazz, swing, stride, New Orleans R &B, blues and boogie woogie. He wrote and produced his first CD of original music in 2002, entitled Papa Roux. He has appeared on many other recordings, playing piano, guitar and accordion.

He has led ensembles, both large and small in San Francisco and in Maine. Whitehead teaches piano and guitar at the Waynflete School in Portland and at 317 Main St. Community Music School in Yarmouth.

Parade, 5K volunteers sought

Ecumenical Thanksgiving service

On Sunday, Nov. 18, at 7 p.m. there will be an all-faiths Thanksgiving service at the First Congregational Church of Durham UCC at 773 Royalsborough Road. Non-perishable foods will be accepted. There will also be a free-will offering to benefit the Lisbon Area Christian Outreach Food Pantry. Light refreshments will be served after the service.

Gun raffle starting

Durham Fire and Rescue, in conjunction with Cabela’s, is selling tickets for its annual gun raffle. Only 3,000 tickets will be sold at $20 each and the odds of winning are 1 in 100.

One winning name will be drawn daily starting on Nov. 1 through Nov. 30. The winner will have choice of gun or a Cabela’s gift certificate. Tickets can be purchased from Durham Fire & Rescue at the station. Call 353-2473 for more information. Tickets are also available at the Durham Get & Go.

Town office closed

The Durham Town Office will be closed on Nov. 12 in observance of Veterans Day.

Craft fair coming up

The Durham Community School PTA will host its second annual craft/business fair on Saturday, Nov. 17, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. in the Durham Community School gym. Admission is free.

The PTA will be serving coffee, breakfast pastries, baked goods, homemade soups and breads and a hot dog lunch. The cost of an 8-foot table is $20 and the PTA is also looking for donations of baked goods and homemade soup to be served at the fair. The event will benefit the school’s student enrichment programs and field trips.

‘Soup and Chat’ Institute

First Congregational Church of Durham pastor the Rev. Michael Johnson hosts the last of the informal supper gatherings Monday, Nov. 12, from 6-7:30 p.m., in the church hall as part of the Institute of Religious & Sociological Trends. A free-will offering will be taken for the family supper.
