KENNEBUNK — In its regular bi-weekly police blotter issued Friday, the Kennebunk Police Department has released a second round of names of those who have been summonsed and charged with engaging a prostitute in connection with the alleged prostitution business operated by Alexis Wright, 29, of Wells.
The first list of names was released on the department’s blotter earlier this month, and included the names of 21 men charged in connection with the alleged operation out of Pura Vida Studio in Kennebunk, a Zumba fitness studio.
Wright, the studio’s owner, was arraigned at Cumberland County Superior Court in Portland on Oct. 9 and pleaded not guilty to 106 counts ranging from engaging in prostitution to violation of privacy and evasion of income tax.
Mark Strong Sr., 57, of Thomaston, who was arrested in June in connection with the investigation into the studio by the Kennebunk Police Department and Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit, was arraigned simultaneously and pleaded not guilty to 12 counts ranging from promotion of prostitution to violation of privacy. Strong is alleged to have funded Wright’s business.
Stephen Schwartz, an attorney representing “John Doe 1” and “John Doe 2,” two men who have been charged with engaging a prostitute, had earlier this month attempted to block his clients’ names from being released, claiming in court documents that the charges “would cause severe and completely irreparable harm to their personal reputations as private citizens, their familial relationships, their professional reputations, and their professional relationships.”
In the motion, Schwartz cited several state statutes, including the Invasion of Privacy Statute and the Maine Victim’s Rights Stature, as well as the Constitutional Right to Privacy.
It is unclear whether the John Doe’s real names have been released on either list of those charged.
Justice Thomas Warren subsequently denied Schwartz’s motion, but due to a court order, the names of those charged were released without ages or addresses ”“ leading to some confusion and misidentification. The original court documents cite criminal invasion of privacy, in reference to the allegation that Wright filmed sexual encounters with clients without their knowledge or permission.
The ages and addresses of those charged were eventually released, following an appeal by MaineToday Media, Inc., publisher of the Portland Press Herald.
Those whose names appeared on the earlier list of summonses are scheduled to appear in Biddeford District Court on dec. 5 at 1 p.m.
The newly released list included the names, ages and addresses of 18 men who have been charged with engaging a prostitute, and they have court dates ranging from December through January. The full list of charges will appear in the public safety log in Saturday’s newspaper.
