WESTBROOK – No one seems to know when the last time was that the Westbrook football team hosted a home playoff game, meaning they were the higher-ranked team, but they will from now on. On Saturday, the Blue Blazes made their historic moment a day to remember with a 34-8 thumping of Fryeburg Academy.
Collin “Just a Junior” Joyce had 146 yards rushing and scored three TDs for Westbrook. His final score was a 65-yard interception return in the fourth quarter. Cale Bollig scored two TDs. Captain and QB Kyle Heath was injured in the second half and left the game, but had already gained 78 yards on only five carries.
So, is everything right and rosy in Blue Blazer land? No. Here’s a weak spot. By their own effort, Fryeburg Academy was able to generate just 132 yards in total offense during the game. Less than, as noted above, just the rushing yardage of Collin Joyce. Penalties by the Blazes, however, gave the Raiders an additional 175 yards, and five first downs.
Next week York is coming to town, hungry and with a lot of Class B playoff experience. The Blue Blazes will not get by the Wildcats if they don’t get control of their penalties. Even long-ime team doctor Ira Stockwell, who was honored at halftime with his wife, Cleta, for their community service and support of Westbrook athletics, won’t be able to sew on all the toes if the Blue Blazes shoot off their own feet again like they did today.
Senior captain Ben Grant tries to get outside for some yardage in the third quarter.

A play by the numbers: In the fourth quarter, #20 (Collin Joyce) goes 65 yards for his third touchdown of the game.
Maurice Johnson (22, left) and Collin Joyce combine to knock away a Raider pass attempt.
With Damion Hayes (55) out in front for protection, Collin Joyce heads to the right for some of his 146 rushing yards.
After the game, Trey Arsenault led his teammates through a congratulatory gantlet of schoolmates, many dressed in Halloween costumes.
