GORHAM – Play seemed even in the scoreless first half between Gorham and Kennebunk, although Gorham was getting a lot more corner kicks.
And Gorham eventually converted.
Gorham scored two goals off corners, 75 seconds apart, early in the second half as the top-seeded team beat No. 4 Kennebunk 4-0 Saturday night in a Western Class A boys’ soccer semifinal.
Connor Reagan, Kyle Curley, Milan Vidovic and Seth Anderson all scored for Gorham. Goalie Alex McCarty made seven saves.
Gorham (14-0-2) advances to a battle of unbeatens Wednesday, when the Rams play host to No. 2 seed Scarborough (14-0-2).
In their one previous meeting on Sept. 8, the teams played to a scoreless tie.
Gorham also had tied Kennebunk 1-1 on Sept. 27.
And on Saturday both teams had their chances in the first half, with Gorham and Kennebunk (10-3-3) taking turns controlling play.
“We played a nice half,” Kennebunk Coach Nate Bean said. “But in those early minutes of the second half (Gorham) understood the game was there to win, and they took it.”
Gorham kept getting corner kicks. And when sophomore Chandler Reagan, Connor’s younger brother, is launching from the corner, Gorham is a threat.
“Chandler served in some nice balls. Very dangerous,” Gorham Coach Tim King said. “We had quite a few in the first half that we just couldn’t connect on. We finally put a couple home.”
Chandler Reagan’s corner early in the second half went right to his brother’s foot and Connor didn’t miss. On the next corner, Alex Owens’ header hit the crossbar and came straight down. Curley kicked it in at 2:20.
Ten minutes later Connor Reagan assisted Vidovic for a commanding 3-0 lead, and Anderson’s goal came with five minutes left.
“We’re a second-half team. It’s been that way all season,” Connor Reagan said.
Led by midfielder Mike Ottman, Kennebunk had good opportunities in the first half but fewer chances in the second.
“I thought they beat us to a lot of the 50-50 balls in the first half,” King said. “We did a much better job of that in the second half. Therefore, we didn’t have to play as much defense.”
