LISBON FALLS – Walker Foehl scored a goal and notched two assists and keeper Juliana Harwood made several key saves early as No. 4 Waynflete scored four times in a 12:30 span of the second half to knock off top-seeded Lisbon 4-0 in Western Class C girls soccer semifinals Friday.

The Greyhounds (13-2-1) had the better chances early, most coming off long throw-ins by Gabby Ouellette, but the Flyers (10-2-4) started coming on near the end of the first half and carried play in the second.

Ariana Giguere headed a Foehl corner kick (one of 11 by Waynflete) over the net and then just missed connecting with another Foehl corner at the far right post before Sadie Cole put the Flyers on the board at 12:12.

Foehl carried the ball into the right corner and crossed to the far post, where an unmarked Cole bodied the ball into the net.

“I work on crosses a lot in practice,” said Foehl. “It’s what I do. I saw Sadie, and she’s good at attacking in the box. The goal definitely gave us some momentum.”

Giguere made it 2-0 five minutes later, taking a Foehl feed and lifting a shot under the crossbar from 15 yards out on the right side.

“We started getting out wide and got into a groove and got our passing going,” said Foehl.

Foehl scored her goal with a 25-yard direct kick, putting it just over a leaping Courtney Martel and into the far left side .

“I’ve been working on my shot, ” said the junior midfielder, “and it was the perfect distance.”

“She’s deadly on free kicks,” said Waynflete Coach Todd Dominski, “she gets behind people, and she takes our corners.”

Marijke Rowse closed out the scoring with 8:18 remaining with another shot under the crossbar after a long carry into the left corner by Cole.

“After we got that first goal, we loosened up,” said Dominski. “We started winning balls and not trying to play pretty — just get the ball and get forward.”

The Greyhounds threatened in the game’s first minute when Kayla Angelico got behind the Flyer defense on a breakaway, but Harwood came out for the point-blank save.

“I’ve been working on reacting rather than thinking,” said Harwood, “and I went down and tried to take up as much space as possible.”

Eight minutes later, Ouellette sent a throw-in from the left to the far post, but Harwood made a diving save of Angelico’s header from the crease.

“We knew she made real long throws, so we worked on them in practice,” said Harwood, “and I’ve been working on my decision making. I try to see everyone and then called everybody away.”

“We had plenty of chances, but their goalie saved the game for them early on,” said Lisbon Coach Jake Gentle, “and that changed the game’s dynamic. But they’re a really good team and they responded well, and we ran out of gas.

“Gabby was playing on one leg, but she has a lot of heart. It was a great season, our best in a long time, and I’m really proud of the kids.”
