To the Editor:
I write in support of Mattie Daughtry, candidate for District 66.
Mattie knows Augusta, where she researched legislative proposals in detail, learned the ropes and gained the respect of legislators in both parties. That experience and her commitment to meeting every citizen she can at their doors throughout District 66 — while working full time — speaks volumes about her work ethic and ability to represent Brunswick.
As Brunswick’s former natural resources planner, I had the real pleasure of working with many citizens who care about Brunswick’s environment. In Maine, environmental standards are significantly determined at the local level, and one person can make an enormous difference. But it takes volunteering for local boards and committees, or showing up at public meetings, or getting involved in the nitty gritty of building consensus and creating real change. It’s not glamorous, but it’s what puts natural resources at the table when decisions are made.
Perhaps because of a misunderstanding about local process or a lack of commitment to do the work required, the Green candidate has simply failed to show up and work for real local environmental change.
Maybe I don’t understand what “Green” means, but given her record of public service and working knowledge, I support Mattie Daughtry.
