On Thursday, Oct. 25, Bill Diamond’s guests on Speakout will be candidates for the Maine House of Representatives Jane Pringle and Stuart (Toby) Pennels (District 111) and Tom Tyler and Ralph Johnston (District 110). Medicare Seminar
A high percentage of Windham residents receive Medicare or are close to Medicare “age” and Southern Maine Agency on Aging provides regular informational seminars to assist people in understanding their options. If you are thinking of making changes in your current insurance or are new to Medicare, or if you have questions about tax rebates, rent rebates, food stamps or fuel assistance, or other questions, you may be interested in signing up for these seminars. Walk-ins can usually be accommodated. The Welcome to Medicare seminar is held from 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesdays, Nov. 6, Nov. 20 and Dec. 4 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help, North Windham. One-on-one counseling sessions are also held with volunteer Medicare advocates every Tuesday through Dec. 11 at Our Lady, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call 1-800-427-7411 or 396-6500 and register. Chili & Chowder
The annual Chili & Chowder dinner at Windham Hill United Church of Christ will be held from 5-6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27. Corn bread, desserts and beverages are on the menu along with a variety of chowders and chili. Adults $8, children under 12, $5.
Help WHS Volleyball
Dinah Aldrich will lead a class of Zumba on Sunday, Oct. 28, at 12:30 p.m. at the North Windham Union Church. Doors open at 12:30 p.m., zumba begins at 1 p.m. $10 a person, all proceeds benefit Windham High School girls volleyball.
Cancer Support Group Meeting
The Windham Cancer Support Group will hold its monthly meeting on Monday, Oct. 29, at 6:30 p.m. at the Windham Public Library, 217 Windham Center Road. Free Community Meal
Enjoy a roast turkey dinner with mashed potato, veggies and dessert on Saturday, Oct. 27, from 4:30-6 p.m. at Christ Chapel, 37 Northern Pines Road (off Route 85 near Crescent Lake), Raymond. The meal is free of charge and open to the surrounding communities. All ages are welcome. Food is continually served, buffet style.
Alumni Meeting
Plans are being made for the 2013 Windham High School Alumni banquet. A meeting of those interested will be at 6 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 29, at the Guidance Conference Room at the high school. Enter at the clock entrance, take a left, just after the main office.
Bean Supper
On Saturday, Nov. 3, an all-you-can-eat baked bean supper will be held from 4:30-6 p.m. at White Rock Community Club, Wilson Road (off Route 237) in Gorham. The menu includes baked beans, hot dogs, macaroni and cheese, biscuits, salads and homemade desserts. Adults $7, kids $3.
Grief Support
VNA Home Health & Hospice will hold a group grief support meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 6, from 6-7:30 p.m. at the North Windham Union Church on Route 302. The subject is, “What do I do with all the stuff?” and is an open group for anyone grieving the death of a loved one. Teacher ?of the Year Contest
The VFW is seeking the teacher of the year in their annual National Citizenship Education Teacher Award contest. Teachers who teach in K-12 can be nominated by fellow teachers, supervisors or other interested individuals, and can win $1,000 for their professional development and $1,000 for their school, plus an all-expenses-paid trip to the VFW’s National Competition. Deadline is Nov. 1, 2012. Teachers are nominated and sent to the local VFW Post competition. The deadline for entering is Nov. 1, 2012. Post winners advance to District, and those winners compete in the state competition; the state winner competes in national competition. Guys and Dolls
Get your tickets now for the Windham High School’s fall musical production of “Guys and Dolls”, at 7 p.m. Nov. 9, 10, 16 and 17 at the Performing Arts Center at the high school. Help for Vets, Dependents
Veterans Service Officer Phyllis D’Orsay will be at the Windham Veterans Center on Wednesday morning, Nov. 14, from 9 a.m. until noon, to assist veterans, widows of veterans and dependents with questions about benefits and other information. If you have questions of a military nature, stop in and get some answers. No appointment is needed.
Veterans’ Health
On Wednesday, Nov. 7, combat veteran and Clinical Psychologist Dr. Clifford Trott from Portland Vet Center will offer mental health services to area veterans on at Windham Veterans Center. These sessions are one-on-one and strictly confidential. Drop-ins are welcome but appointments are recommended. Call 780-3584. He is usually available on the first and third Wednesdays. To get to the Windham Veterans Center, enter Veterans Memorial Drive off Route 302 between Evergreen Credit Union and Friendly’s and follow to the end.
