PORTLAND — After struggling through a tough 4-10 season last year, the Wiscasset High School girls soccer team hoped to take big strides this season.

The Wolverines did indeed turn things around, attaining the No. 5 seed in Western Maine Class C and qualifying for the quarterfinals.

Though Wiscasset’s run ended with a 2-1 loss to fourth-seeded Waynflete on Tuesday, second-year coach Duane Goud is excited for the future.

“These are a great group of girls, 21 players working together as a team and not individuals,” said Goud, whose squad finished 10-4-1. “We didn’t have the drama, and the girls brought it together. We lose just one senior (Alyssa Smith) and got a taste of the playoffs. Plus, we have six eighth-graders coming up next season, so we are hoping to play a limited jayvee schedule. The future is bright.”

Against the Flyers (9-2-4 and slated to visit No. 1 Lisbon on Friday in the Western C semifinals), Wiscasset, despite being outplayed in the first half, went to the break tied 1-1 on a goal by Maddy Wehrle. Miranda McIntire served a free kick toward the Waynflete goal, and Wehrle directed the ball past Flyers netminder Juliana Harwood (four saves).

Waynflete took a 1-0 lead on an Isabelle Agnew goal with 26:25 remaining in the first half, and the Flyers made it a 2-1 game with 20:39 left in regulation on an Esme Benson score off an assist from Walker Foehl.

Wiscasset goaltender Kayla Gordon had seven saves. The Flyers held a 9-5 shots advantage and 9-1 edge in corner kicks.

“Waynflete was able to control the ball and had a lot of good touches,” said Goud. “They are a good team.”
