BRUNSWICK
The public is weighing in on a proposed merger between Parkview Adventist Medical Center and Central Maine Healthcare today.
The Department of Health and Human Services hearing was scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. and continue until 5 p.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall at 2 Columbus Drive.
The state is considering a proposal by Lewiston-based Central Maine Healthcare to take over control of Parkview. The state has already rejected a competing Certificate of Need proposal from Brunswick-based Mid Coast Hospital, saying the merger is not subject to review under the state’s Certificate of Need law.
Mid Coast Hospital spokesman Steve Trockman has said his hospital intends to pursue its takeover through a provision in the law that requires the state to consider lower-cost alternatives when ruling on hospital mergers.
DHHS Commissioner Mary Mayhew has said the state would first have to reject CMHC’s Certificate of Need application before Mid Coast could come forward with another proposal.
She said Mid Coast Hospital’s claim that absorbing Parkview could save the community money is one of many factors in the department’s decision.
