SOUTH BERWICK — A bear cub that was spotted on North Street in South Berwick wandered onto the campus of Berwick Academy before it disappeared into a wooded area near the private school Monday afternoon.

A dispatcher for the South Berwick Police Department said  police followed the bear cub to Berwick Academy off Academy Street where it climbed into a tree.

The Maine Warden’s Service sent Eric Blanchard, a game warden, to the school. After consulting with police, authorities decided to leave the bear alone.

After some time had passed, the bear climbed out of the tree and meandered into a wooded area without incident.

The bear was sighted in South Berwick about 3:23 p.m.
