FREEPORT — Rhys Nason’s diving catch in the end zone of Brady Neujahr 1-yard pass with six seconds remaining gave Yarmouth a dramatic 14-8 win over Freeport in a Western Class C football game Saturday.
The win gave Yarmouth (2-6), the two-time defending state champion, the eighth and final spot in the regional playoffs and denied Freeport (4-4) its second straight trip to the playoffs.
Trailing 8-6, the Clippers took over on downs at their own 36 with 1:40 left. On second down, Neujahr found Nate Shields-Auble behind the defense for a 55-yard pass to the 9.
Neujahr carried to the 1, and one play later rolled left and hit Nason in the corner of the end zone.
Ben MacMillan’s 2-yard run and Dan Burke’s 2-point conversion gave Freeport an 8-0 lead in the first quarter. Neujahr and Shields-Auble combined for a 6-yard score midway through the fourth quarter after Yarmouth blocked a punt, but the Clippers missed the 2-point conversion.
Burke finished with 125 yards rushing. Neujahr passed for 171 yards – 165 in the second half.
