BRUNSWICK
Sure, it’s great to learn about fire safety and how to behave when confronted with a houseful of smoke.
But ask any of the hundreds of students and adults who attended the recent open house at Brunswick Fire Department during Fire Prevention Week, and they’ll tell you the real prize is a ride to school in a fire truck.
Chase Ross, from Harriett Beecher Stowe School; Evan Zavitz, from Coffin School; and Charlize O’Leary from St. John’s School will trade the school bus for either Engine 1 or 3, according to BFD’s Padi Howard.
The commute hasn’t been scheduled yet but is likely to be in early November, Howard said.
Other prizes included Fire Prevention Week tee shirts, plush dalmatians. Kids also learned how to slide down the station’s fire pole and crawl through the department’s “smoke house” training course.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
