Big 20 supports Buy Local Scarborough

Mike Walker and Rick Jones, who purchased the Big 20 Bowling Center in December 2010, have been revitalizing the 60-year-old building using local craftsmen.

“When the building was constructed by the Anton family in 1950, all of the products and craftsmen were local residents and our pledge to ourselves and the community was to work with local craftsmen as we started our modernization” said Jones.

“The Big 20 is rich in history and tradition, so finding local tradesmen is very important to us, as it was in the 1950s,” said Walker. “From the mason’s that built the walls and the carpenters that built and installed the lanes, to the maple and pine that was cut local and milled in Gorham, everything was locally provided.”

The renovations started in March 2011. Beginning with a new computer scoring system and building lighting system, the Big 20 turned to local electrician JB Folsom for all the installation and lighting fixtures. “JB treated us right,” said Walker. “Pricing was the best we got and the service was exceptional. During testing of the system on Day 1, we had a minor glitch and JB took our call at 6 a.m., was here by 6:30 and problem solved. We couldn’t have received that level of service from one of the larger, regional outfits”

When is was time for the next phase, replacing the bathrooms and adding to the lounge/restaurant facility, Big 20 turned to local Boardman Custom Carpentry.

Supporting our Scarborough local businesses has many advantages; keeping local business thriving and keeping local dollars circulating within the community are the obvious points,” Walker said. “Having local support and local pride in work are the extra bonuses.”
