A suspect in the Sept. 30 stabbing of two 25- year-old Brunswick women has been arrested in California.

Brunswick police had been searching for 31-year-old Jamie Mondragon of Auburn since he allegedly stabbed a 25-year-old woman at 9 Perryman Drive at around 2 a.m. on Sept. 30.

The woman was transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland for multiple stab wounds to the chest and leg. Deputy Chief Marc Hagan said this morning he believes the woman was released from the hospital the next day.

Another 25-year-old woman who intervened during the incident received cuts to the hand. She was taken to Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick and received stitches.

Hagan said this morning Mondragon was arrested Friday afternoon in Fresno, Calif., by the U.S. Marshals Service. The arrest was a result of the U.S. Marshals, the Maine Violent Offender Task Force and the Brunswick Police Department working together to develop information that Mondragon had made his way to the Fresno area, where police believe he has acquaintances.

Marshals watched an area Mondragon was believed to frequent, found him and arrested him Friday afternoon on warrants charging aggravated assault and reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, as well as on a probation hold.

He was being held today at the Fresno County (Calif.) Jail until he can be extradited to Maine.

There were three small children inside the apartment at the time the stabbing occurred, but they were upstairs and did not directly witness the incident. A paring knife was recovered from the scene. Mondragon fled the scene prior to the arrival of responding officers.

Hagan said the arrest came from a combination of good detective work and helpful hints from the public.
