U.S. wins critical match in World Cup qualifying

Eddie Johnson scored twice Friday night, including the winning goal in second-half injury time, lifting the United States to the verge of advancing in World Cup qualifying with a nervous 2-1 victory over Antigua and Barbuda at St. John’s, Antigua.

Johnson was a late addition to the squad by coach Jurgen Klinsmann, replacing the disappointing Jozy Altidore.

If the Americans beat Guatemala on Tuesday night in Kansas City, Kan., they will move into the final round of CONCACAF qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. The U.S. has 10 points in Group A.

Johnson connected on headers in the 20th minute and then in the dying moments in his first game for the U.S. team in two years.

EUROPEAN TOUR: Ross Fisher of England shot a 4-under 67 to extend his lead at the Portugal Masters to three strokes after the second round at Vilamoura, Portugal.

Scotland’s Stephen Gallacher and Bernd Wiesberger of Austria are three shots back.

European Ryder Cup player Martin Kaymer and captain Jose Maria Olazabal missed the cut.

CHAMPIONS TOUR: Dan Forsman shot a 7-under 65 to take a one-stroke lead over Fred Funk, David Frost and Larry Mize after the first round of the Greater Hickory Classic at Conover, N.C.

WORLD GOLF FINAL: Justin Rose beat Lee Westwood to win the eight-player tournament at Belek, Turkey, and earn a career-best $1.5 million.

Rose’s 5-under 66 beat his Ryder Cup teammate by one stroke.

LPGA: Defending champion Na Yeon Choi took a two-stroke lead in the LPGA Malaysia, shooting a 4-under 67 to reach 10 under at Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

TENNIS

GENERALI LADIES: Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium defeated two-time champion Ana Ivanovic 6-4, 6-0 in the quarterfinals at Linz, Austria. Top-ranked Victoria Azarenka, fifth-seeded Julia Goerges and Irina-Camelia Begu also advanced to the semifinals.

SHANGHAI MASTERS: Roger Federer, Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Tomas Berdych — the top four seeded players — all reached the semifinals at Shanghai.

Federer beat Marin Cilic of Croatia, and Murray improved his Shanghai record to 11-0 by defeating Radek Stepanek.

Djokovic easily beat Tommy Haas of Germany, and will face Berdych, who outlasted Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the day’s first match.

CYCLING

TOUR OF BEIJING: Marco Haller of Austria won a mass sprint to the finish for his first professional victory in the fourth stage, a 103-mile route from Yanging to Chang Ping.

PREPS

BOYS’ SOCCER: Jamal Fazer Borden scored three goals to lead the Hyde Phoenix of Bath to a 5-2 victory over the Hyde Wolf Pack of Woodstock, Vt., in a match at Bath.

Welsey Miller added two goals for the Phoenix.

MOTOR SPORTS

NASCAR: Joey Logano raced to his eighth Nationwide Series victory of the year, passing Brad Keselowski with eight laps to go after taking on two tires and a splash of gas at Concord, N.C.

Logano led 62 laps en route to his 17th career victory and first at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
