SANFORD — Alex Shain made his last game at Cobb Stadium count, as he rushed for five touchdowns to lead Sanford to a 34-7 victory over Windham on Friday.
Shain saved his best game of the season for senior night, and he started it off with a 65-yard touchdown run on Sanford’s first possession. Shain took a sweep to the left and zigged and zagged his way to the end zone.
“I had blocks down field, and I was just working my way around it. I had open space, and I just made a play,” said Shain, who finished the game with 276 yards on 25 carries.
Equally as impressive as Shain and the Spartan offense was the play of the Sanford defense. It had a tough assignment to try and stop Windham’s dual threat quarterback, Damien Shepard, but the Spartans rose to the challenge.
“(I was) very pleased defensively,” said head coach Mike Fallon. “I was very, very concerned about their offense.”
Shepard scored Windham’s lone touchdown on a 13-yard run early in the second quarter, but otherwise was held in check.
“Shepard’s a good player, they’re all really good, and we stopped them tonight,” said Shain, who also had an active night at linebacker.
Shain scored his second touchdown with just five seconds left in the first half, as the Spartans gained momentum going into the locker room. The Spartans took possession on the Eagles’ 32 after Ethan Gouin snuffed out a fake punt, knocking Shepard back for a 3-yard loss. Cody Mooney ran for 10 yards on fourth down to set up a 2-yard run for Shain to cap off the drive.
After Sanford punted on its first drive of the second half, the Sanford defense stopped Shepard on fourth down in Spartan territory. Shain and Josh Schroder took turns running the ball, with Shain running for an 8-yard score to make it 19-7 Spartans.
Shain added touchdown runs of 29 and 2 yards as Sanford pulled away for a big win.
“That was kind of our mantra going into the week, for all the kids, that we needed to rise up and play big in a big game,” said Fallon.
“We played it as a playoff game tonight,” said Shain. “We knew we had to win.”
The win was the first at home for the Spartans, who started off the season 0-3 at Cobb Stadium.
Sanford moved to 4-3, and all but assured itself a playoff spot. The Spartans travel to Massabesic for their regular season finale next week.
For Shain and the rest of the seniors, it was a memorable final game in front of the home crowd. Shain said there were some tears shed, and some high emotions, and they put it all together out on the field.
“Our team played a hell of a game,” Shain said simply.
