CUMBERLAND — Drew Hodge passed for two touchdowns and ran for another to lead Greely to a 35-0 victory over Mountain Valley in Class B football Friday night at Greely.

The Rangers (6-1) set the tone for the game when they scored on the opening possession of the contest. Hodge capped a 10-play drive with a 31-yard run for a 7-0 lead less than three minutes into the game.

“The first drive always sets the tone,” said Hodge, who completed nine of 20 passes for 125 yards. “We were pumped up and we just executed the game plan and it worked. We got a nice score.”

Greely put together another extended drive at the tail end of the first quarter that led to a 14-0 lead.

This time an 18-play drive ate up a ton of time and lasted into the early stages of the second quarter. Hodge found Svenn Jacobson, who ran for more than half (32 yards) of the 62 yards covered during the drive, for a 1-yard touchdown reception.

“They were getting tired but that’s the whole idea of our offense,” said Greely Coach David Higgins, who added that the victory was Greely’s first ever over Mountain Valley.

“We throw the ball well and then we are also very blessed that we can pound the ball too. It’s kind of easy when you have great players, and that’s what we have.”

Jacobson, who collected 100 yards on 14 carries in the opening half, completed the first half scoring.

He scampered for a 34-yard gain to ignite a late drive and finished things up by scoring on a 4-yard run with three minutes left before the break to give the Rangers a 21-0 lead.

The Rangers’ defense smothered the Mountain Valley offense in the opening 24 minutes. The Falcons made it over midfield only once in the first half, managed only two first downs and totaled 39 yards of offense.

“They were just real quick,” said Mountain Valley Coach Jim Alyward, who was back patrolling the sidelines after undergoing throat surgery earlier in the week.

“They’re a terrific team and they play very physical. They’re not overly big but the kids they have are strong and quick. I thought they played terrific.”

The loss marked a third straight setback for the Falcons (2-5) and the second straight time they were shut out.

Greely struck quickly to open the second half to build a 28-0 lead.

Pat Finnegan picked off Mountain Valley quarterback Ryan Nichols and returned the ball 40 yards for a touchdown.

The Rangers completed the scoring in the fourth quarter when Hodge connected with Nick Maynard on a 63-yard touchdown pass.
