KANSAS CITY, Mo. – T.J. Tynan scored the only goal early in the third period as Notre Dame defeated Maine 1-0 in the opening round of the Ice Breaker Tournament at the Sprint Center on Friday.

Using assists from Bryan Rust and Robbie Russo, Tynan stuffed the puck between Dan Sullivan’s pads 2:59 into the third period.

Sullivan had a strong game for Maine, stopping 33 shots, including an outstanding pad save late in the second period.

The Black Bears (0-2) struggled on offense, managing just six shots in each of the first two periods and were outshot 34-22 for the game.

The Black Bears were unable to score on any of their four power plays, but also did not allow Notre Dame to score on any of its man advantages.

Maine pulled Sullivan for the final minute, but any advantage created by the extra skater was nullified when the team was called for too many men on the ice with 15 seconds left.

Maine will play either Army or Nebraska- Omaha in the 4:30 p.m. consolation Saturday. Notre Dame (1-0) will play at 7 p.m.

It was Notre Dame’s fourth win in five meetings between the teams, dating back to Nov. 1991. Maine actually won back-to-back games against the Irish that season, but had to forfeit them due to ineligible players.

The teams last played in December 2003 — also a 1-0 victory for the Irish.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

QUINNIPIAC 6, MAINE 1: Kelly Babstock scored four goals to lead Quinnipiac over the Black Bears in a season opener at Hamden, Conn.

Quinnipiac held a 4-0 lead for more than two periods until Maine found the net midway through the third. Audra Richards was set up by Brooklyn Langlois and Brittany Dougherty for the Black Bears’ lone score.

Maine used two goalies in the contest. Kylie Smith started and played 26 minutes with nine saves and three goals allowed. Meghann Treacy played 33 minutes, giving up three goals with 24 saves. Bobcat goalie Victoria Vigilanti had eight saves to earn the win.

FIELD HOCKEY

BOSTON UNIVERSITY 3, MAINE 1: Jacinda McLeod broke a 1-1 tie early in the second half and the Terriers (9-4, 3-0 America East) went on for the win over the Black Bears (9-6, 2-1) at Cambridge, Mass.

Maine’s Holly Stewart scored at 10:45 for the only goal of the first half and Alicia Frisch had seven saves for the Black Bears.
