CAPE ELIZABETH – Jane Coffrin scored a pair of goals to lead Cape Elizabeth to a 2-1 victory against Yarmouth in a Western Maine Conference field hockey game Wednesday at Hannaford Field.

Typically known for setting up goals, Coffrin enjoyed the spotlight moment.

“I’m used to making the perfect pass to get the goal, but today I had people making the right passes and the right shots for me and the ball went right in,” said Coffrin. “It’s just whoever has the magic touch that day and today it was me.”

The two-goal game was even sweeter for Coffrin because it arrived on senior night and, in all likelihood, helped assure the Capers (8-6) of a preliminary home playoff game.

“This win should solidify a home playoff game (Saturday),” said Cape Elizabeth Coach Darci Holland, who thought the win could move the Capers to as high as seventh in the Heal point standings depending on other results. “If we lost, I believe we would have been going to Yarmouth and playing each other again on Saturday.”

The Capers jumped on Yarmouth (7-6-1) early. Coffrin took a pass from Lauren Steidl and beat goalkeeper Nicole Hickey for a 1-0 lead 4:22 into the game.

Cape Elizabeth continued to carry most of the play until the final moments of the first half, when the Clippers asserted some excellent pressure.

The final-minute blitz featured a point-blank chance by Carlene Shaw that was turned aside by Capers keeper Julianne Ayers.

Yarmouth continued to apply offensive pressure until the halftime buzzer provided Cape Elizabeth with a much-needed break.

Yarmouth carried its momentum into the second half and eventually tied the game midway through the half.

The tying goal came after Lily Daggett served a corner out to Kallie Hutchinson, who drilled a long shot to the back of the goal with authority.

“I think that one thing that we’re working on is coming out with that intensity for 60 straight minutes,” said Yarmouth Coach Mindy Lewis.

“There have been games this year where we’ve accomplished that, but today we had a couple of dips and Cape took advantage.”

Four minutes later, the Capers answered with what turned out to be the deciding goal off a corner of its own. Coffrin started and ended the play, passing to Aubrey O’Meara and then getting to the front of the goal to tip O’Meara’s offering past Hickey.

“That’s one of the biggest things that freak people out,” said Coffrin.

“If you are in the lead all game, then all of a sudden you’re tied again. You really have to make the effort and go back and get it done. That’s exactly what we did.”
