Celtics earn win over Milano on preseason tour overseas

Rajon Rondo scored all 17 of his points in the first quarter and added six assists to lead the Boston Celtics to a 105-75 win over Emporio Armani Milano on Sunday at Milan, Italy, two days after the NBA team opened its preseason European tour with a loss in Turkey.

Jeff Green also had 17 points off the bench for Boston.

The Celtics are scheduled to return to Boston on Monday.

WNBA: Simon Augustus scored 21 points as the Minnesota Lynx held off the host Los Angeles Sparks 80-79, advancing to the WNBA finals to defend their title against either Connecticut or Indiana.

The Sparks collected two of the league’s season-ending awards, with Nneka Ogwumike honored as rookie of the year and Carol Ross chosen coach of the year.

RUNNING

CHICAGO MARATHON: Ethiopia’s Tsegaye Kebede shattered the course record, crossing the line in 2 hours, 4 minutes and 38 seconds, while Atsede Baysa made it a sweep for the country with a thrilling win in the women’s race, edging Kenya’s Rita Jeptoo by about a step with a winning time of 2:22:03.

BAA HALF MARATHON: Kenya’s Allan Kiprono set an event record with a time of 1 hour, 1 minute and 44 seconds to win the 12th annual event in Boston, while Kim Smith of New Zealand won the women’s title with 1:10:57.

TWIN CITIES MARATHON: Christopher Kipyego of Kenya finished in 2 hours, 14 minutes and 5 seconds to take the overall victory in St. Paul, Minn., and Jeannette Faber of Portland, Ore., won the women’s race in 2:32:38, a personal record.

Sheri Piers, 41, of Falmouth, was ninth overall among the women and second in the masters division with a time of 2:36:59.

USA 10-MILE: Mo Trafeh and Janet Bawcom repeated as men’s and women’s champions at St. Paul, Minn. Trafeh won in 46:56, 23 seconds faster than Ben True, a Greely High graduate. Bawcom won in 53:43, with Duluth native Kara Goucher finishing second in 53:56.

FOOTBALL

NEFL: Phil Warren rushed for 182 yards and three touchdowns to power the Southern Maine Raging Bulls to a 42-14 victory over the New Hampshire Wolfpack in the first round of the New England Football League playoffs Saturday night at Deering High School.

Alexis Colon threw a pair of touchdown passes and Rodericus Buford rushed for a TD for the Raging Bulls (9-2), who will be on the road against the Boston Bandits (9-1) in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

GOLF

PGA: Former UNLV player Ryan Moore won the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open at Las Vegas for his second PGA Tour title, birdieing the 16th hole to take the outright lead and finishing with a 5-under 66 for a one-stroke victory over Brendon de Jonge.

european tour: Branden Grace earned his fourth victory of the season, shooting a 2-under 70 at St. Andrews, Scotland, to protect his lead and win the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship by two shots.

CHAMPIONS TOUR: Bernhard Langer rallied to win the SAS Championship at Cary, N.C., and took the lead in the Charles Schwab Cup points race, shooting a 9-under 63 to beat Jay Don Blake by two strokes.

TENNIS

CHINA OPEN: Top-seeded Novak Djokovic extended his perfect record at the China Open when he defeated third-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 7-6 (4), 6-2 in the final at Beijing.

On the women’s side, top-seeded Victoria Azarenka won her fifth title of the year, dominating second-seeded Maria Sharapova 6-3, 6-1.

JAPAN OPEN: Eighth-seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan beat Milos Raonic of Canada 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-0 in the final at Tokyo.

AUTO RACING

FORMULA ONE: Red Bull driver Sebastian Vettel won the Japanese Grand Prix from the pole at Suzuka, Japan, and closed within four points of championship leader Fernando Alonso, who crashed out on the first turn.

SOCCER

PREMIER LEAGUE: Veteran American goalkeeper Brad Friedel was dropped to the bench for Tottenham’s 2-0 win over Aston Villa, ending his record run of 310 Premier League starts. France captain Hugo Lloris, a summer signing from Lyon, started over Friedel and posted a shutout in his league debut.

SPANISH LEAGUE: Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo dueled each other to an entertaining stalemate, with both superstars scoring twice as Barcelona drew 2-2 with Real Madrid to keep an eight-point lead over its archrival.

TRIATHLON

ARMSTRONG COMPETES: Lance Armstrong competed in a half ironman triathlon in Ellicott City, Md., after organizers dropped USA Triathlon sanctioning so he could take part in a race that raises money for cancer research and treatment.

He finished in 4 hours, 16 minutes at the Revolution3 Half-Full Triathlon, racing in a wave of about 50 fellow cancer survivors.
