PORTLAND – It took six weeks but Cheverus High finally found a game that put its skill to the test.

Ryan Casale caught three touchdown passes as the Stags stretched their three-year winning streak to 30 with a 21-7 victory against Bonny Eagle in a Western Class A football game Saturday at Boulos Stadium.

“This was the first real game that we’ve had all year, as far as I’m concerned,” said Casale. “I was happy it went like this. We had a good outcome and won by a couple of touchdowns. It was good to test our character. We got in a dogfight but we came out victorious and that’s what counts.”

Cheverus (6-0) will seek to tie the Class A record of 31 straight wins in the season’s showdown game next Saturday, when it takes on Thornton Academy, the region’s only other unbeaten team, at 1:30 p.m. at Saco.

As for this one, Bonny Eagle (2-4) proved tough. Cheverus opened with a 78-yard drive to the Scots’ 2 but was stopped on fourth down.

Cheverus did score first when a Bonny Eagle punt was driven into the line, putting the Stags on the Scots’ 15. Three plays later, Liam Fitzpatrick connected with Casale on a 10-yard pass for a 7-0 lead.

Fitzpatrick intercepted a Zach Dubiel pass on the next series. Midway through that drive that brought the Stags to the Scots’ 2 again, fullback Brent Green was helped off the field with what appeared to be a left leg injury. Green spent the rest of the game on crutches on the sidelines.

“It doesn’t look good,” Cheverus Coach John Wolfgram said.

The Stags again turned the ball over on downs, and on Bonny Eagle’s first play, Dubiel hit Joe Bissonnette on a 98-yard scoring pass to make it 7-7.

Cheverus took the lead for good late in the second quarter when Bissonnette’s punt from deep in his end zone gave the Stags the ball at the Bonny Eagle 22. On the first play, Fitzpatrick found Casale on a 22-yard touchdown pass to give the Stags a 14-7 halftime lead.

“We made critical mistakes at times and put ourselves in bad field position, and you can’t do that against these guys,” said Bonny Eagle Coach Kevin Cooper. “That’s a recipe for losing when you play Cheverus.”

Zordan Holman’s interception on the Bonny Eagle 16 set up Casale’s third touchdown, a 2-yard reception three minutes into the third quarter.

Now, said Wolfgram, his team finally can start thinking of Thornton.

“A lot of other people have been thinking about them for seven weeks and we’ve been thinking about whoever’s the next game,” he said. “Obviously it’s going to be a tough game. They are a very, very good football team. We’ll see.”
