October Festivals
The soggiest weekend this year decided to wait until October was right at our doorstep! Pretty much a washout. Since my job relies on great weekend weather, I tend to notice these things more than most. They say rain on your wedding day is good luck, right?
The Fryeburg Fair is on, off to a rainy start, but I am sure the crowds will come regardless. On your way to the Fair, don’t forget to stop by the Naples Lions Club stand on the Causeway and pick up some homemade apples pies, cider, pumpkins, and of course, bags of apples. The Lions will be set up this weekend from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Naples Causeway
As per the agreement with the town and state, no traffic delays can be incurred during the Fryeburg Fair week. However, after Columbus Day, it would be best to think about alternate travel routes to your destinations that do not involve Route 302. Major delays are expected as the crew finishes up paving surfaces through the causeway and across the bridge. This work is expected to last two to three days.
Cider Feast Field Trip
The Kindergarten classes from Songo Locks School went on their annual Cider Fest Field Trip put on by the Lake Region Vocational Center. Each of the vocational center programs sponsored stations, ranging from a Playdough station to a hammering station. The students learned about apples, cider pressing along with getting their face painted, making cinnamon buns and pretending to saute onions and carrots spilling them happily onto the grass. It was a wonderful day and everyone had a great time. The teachers at Songo Locks would like to send a big thank-you to all who helped make it a great day for their students.
October Library Update
Autumn has arrived! The petunias at the Naples Public Library are fading and will be gone soon; the porch railings are freshly painted, the carpeting and upholstery cleaned and the library is once again closed on Fridays. New books and programs are available for all ages. In keeping with the season, the Family Art Night will be painting pumpkins at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 24. In the adult library, learn to use an e-reader and how to borrow books through the library on Tuesday, Oct. 9, at 5:30 p.m. On Tuesday, Oct. 9, or Tuesday, Oct. 23, at 7 p.m., head down to the library for a game of Scrabble. On Tuesday, Oct. 16, at 5:30 p.m., take an introduction to Word Processing class. If you have always wanted to join a book club, here’s your chance as the one at the library will meet Wednesday, Oct. 17, at 1:30 p.m. to discuss “The Bells” by Richard Harvell.
Shoot Some Hoops
The Naples Recreation Department is having registration night for its youth basketball program (grades 1-6) on Tuesday, Oct. 9, from 5-8 p.m. at the Naples Town Hall. The fee is $25 per child and $40 per family, checks only please. The absolute deadline for registration (grades 3-6) is Nov. 1 at 4 p.m. and grades 1 and 2 is Dec. 7 at 4 p.m. If you have any questions, call Harvey Price at 693-6364 or email at recreation@townofnaples.org.
Gardener Recognition
The Songo Garden Club of Naples held its annual Beautification Awards on Thursday, Sept. 13. The awards go to individuals with exceptional gardens as well as businesses who beautify their space with gardens and flowers. You can identify those winners by looking for their Beautification Award Sign that no doubt they will be proudly displayed. This year the club handed out 15 awards at a member’s home. The public is invited to attend Garden Club events. The next one will be on Oct. 11 when member Pat Griffin will speak on the use of herbs. The meeting will be held at the Singer Center at the Village Green. Meetings cease for the months of January, February and March, but then resume full force with April and the coming of the planting season.
