TOPSHAM

Topsham police are again warning residents to lock their vehicles and close garage doors after several vehicles were burglarized on Foreside Road over the weekend.

Police Chief Christopher Lewis said the break-ins occurred along Foreside Road Saturday night and Sunday morning. The first report came in around 7:45 a.m. Sunday, followed by seven more complaints.

Two more burglaries were reported Tuesday, making for a total of 12 vehicles and 10 residences hit.

All the vehicles were either in driveways or garages with the garage doors left open, and all were unlocked, Lewis said, making these “crimes of opportunity.”

All burglarized vehicles had a GPS or some sort of portable electronic device such as a DVD player stolen, Lewis said. As of Tuesday, there were no suspects.

Lewis said GPS, or global positioning system devices, are extremely popular, easy to sell and take very little effort to steal.

“Remember to lock your vehicle and close your garage at night,” Lewis said. He also suggested people install motion sensor lights and to “call us if you hear something or see something out of the ordinary. Don’t wait until the next day; call us while it’s happening.”
