WESTBROOK — Construction will start Tuesday on a 60-unit assisted-living community at 320 Spring St. for people with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of memory loss.

The $14.5 million project is a joint venture of the Sandy River Co. of Portland and Northbridge Companies of Burlington, Mass.

Avita of Stroudwater will combine state-of-the-art building design, specially trained staff and innovative programs to serve some of the 25,000 people in Maine who have Alzheimer’s disease, said Wendy Nowokunski, Northbridge’s president.

The project is designed by Gawron Turgeon Architects and will be built by Allied Cook Construction, both of Scarborough.

A groundbreaking ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday.
