GORHAM – The owner of an apartment building ravaged by fire in June said he intends to rebuild.

“We’re definitely going to rebuild it,” said Dwayne St. Ours, the building’s Gorham-based owner.

He said he was only “waiting for the insurance” to help pay for the repairs, and would rebuild as soon as possible.

Fire officials deemed the three-story building at 689 Main St. a total loss after a fire tore through it at around 9 p.m. on June 26. Fire investigators determined the official cause was a child playing with a lighter.

No one was hurt, but Marie Brushaber, who lived with her husband in an upstairs apartment, was home alone at the time of the fire, and had to be led to safety by a Westbrook police officer.

Today, the building remains as it was after the fire, a burned-out shell, with damage still visible on the house next door. Public Safety Director Mike Pardue said that house only had superficial damage to the siding, and no one had to move out.

But St. Ours’ building remains uninhabitable. In all, three families were displaced by the fire.

Pardue said he would like to see the building fixed up.

“Hopefully, they’ll do something soon, because it needs to be addressed,” he said.
