Get ‘Pink in the Rink’ with the Pirates

The Portland Pirates will hold its sixth annual “Pink in the Rink” breast cancer awareness night on Saturday, Oct. 27. Brunswick’s Mid Coast Hospital’s Breast Health Center is partnering with the Maine Medical Center Cancer Institute and the Pirates to organize and sponsor this event.

The game will be held at the Androscoggin Bank Colise?e on Birch Street in Lewiston. It starts at 7 p.m. with a pre-game ceremony at center ice honoring survivors.

During the evening, the Mid Coast Hospital’s Breast Center will also hold a raffle for many items, including an autographed Portland Pirates breast cancer awareness jersey, an autographed picture of Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia, a bobble head of Red Sox player Dustin Pedroia, a steak and lobster dinner plus an overnight stay at the Driftwood Inn on Bailey Island, a Portland Sea Dogs basket with tickets for four, a Portland Red Claws basket, including a basketball signed by the team.

All proceeds from the auction and a portion of ticket sales will go to benefit the American Cancer Society’s “Making Strides Against Breast Cancer” walk, which will be held in Brunswick at 11a.m. on Sunday, Oct. 14. Heating assistance is now available

Residents of Freeport and Pownal can now apply for the Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) at the Freeport Community Center.

LIHEAP provides a once-a-year benefit to cover a portion of the cost of purchasing heating energy, which includes fuel oil, kerosene, electricity, wood and coal. This program gives priority to elderly persons or those who have children under the age of two.

First-time applicants can contact Julie Fraser at 865-3985 ext. 215 for more information, or to set up an appointment. Residents who have already received benefits will have an application mailed to them.

Brunswick hospital sets ?open house ?on midwifery

Mid Coast Hospital’s National Midwifery Week Open House is Wednesday, Oct. 10, from 6-8 pm.

The event will include refreshments and a brief presentation outlining the full range of women’s health care services provided by the certified nurse-midwives at Mid Coast Hospital, located at 123 Medical Center Drive in Brunswick. It will also include a tour of the women’s health care and maternity care centers, the birthing rooms and the water birth space.

In addition, attendees will have a chance to meet certified nurse-midwives. These accredited professionals have earned master’s degrees and are trained in nursing and have passed national and state licensing certification exams. They offer specialty pregnancy and birthing services, and are fully supported by the hospital’s obstetrics/gynecology doctors.

The midwifery services at Mid Coast Hospital encompass a full range of health care services for women from adolescence through menopause. These services include gynecologic and family planning services, preconception care, as well as care during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period. Midwifery care also includes health promotion, disease prevention, and individualized wellness education and counseling.

Freeport town clerk earns certification

Freeport Town Clerk Tracey Stevens recently earned the designation of Certified Municipal Clerk (CMC) by the International Institute of Municipal Clerks.

The International Institute of Municipal Clerks grants the CMC designation to municipal clerks who complete education requirements and who have a record of significant contributions to their local government, their community and state.

The International Institute of Municipal Clerks, founded in 1947, has 10,300 members throughout the United States, Canada and 15 other countries. Its mission of this global nonprofit corporation is to enhance the education opportunities and professional development of its membership.
