A Cumberland County Jail sergeant was charged with driving drunk in Gorham last weekend.

Gorham police stopped Jennifer Slocum, 42, on South Street at 2:11 a.m. Saturday, police said. A court date has been set for Nov. 14.

Slocum works in the jail’s intake area, said Sheriff Kevin Joyce. He said she does not drive as part of her duties so there will be no immediate impact on her job.

Once the criminal case is resolved, the sheriff’s office will open an internal affairs case to look at the circumstances of the charge and how Slocum interacted with the officer, Joyce said.

“It is a reflection on the sheriff’s office,” he said.

Joyce said he knew little about the circumstances of the arrest. He said he was told that Slocum’s blood alcohol level was relatively high but she was cooperative.

“I was a big enforcer of drunk-driving laws when I was on the road and I still hold that belief, so it’s very disappointing,” Joyce said.

Slocum is a good employee, Joyce said. She “knows her job. She’s a good sergeant,” he said.
