DETROIT – Detroit Tigers right-hander Max Scherzer has recovered well enough from a fatigued shoulder to pitch the opener in Sunday’s doubleheader against the Minnesota Twins.

His last start was cut short Tuesday night after just two innings because his arm felt weak.

Scherzer is 16-6 and leads the majors with 224 strikeouts — one more than teammate Justin Verlander.

REDS: Manager Dusty Baker stayed in a Chicago hospital Saturday, getting another day of treatment for an irregular heartbeat while his team clinched the NL Central title.

Baker, 63, was hospitalized Wednesday because of the heart problem that he’s had for some time.

The Reds had hoped to have him back as they prepared for a division-clinching celebration, but doctors in Chicago were being cautious.

“The report is they want to give him one more day, make sure everything is fine before they release him,” said bench coach Chris Speier, who is running the team in Baker’s absence.

CARDINALS: Right-hander Jake Westbrook was shut down just a few pitches into his bullpen session.

Westbrook suffered a strained right oblique Sept. 8 and postponed his bullpen session Friday. He is 13-11 with a 3.97 ERA.Through Friday’s games.
